Normally, window 10 can be obtained in three ways: either buy a license key to Windows 10 online, upgrade an existing Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 PC or buy a new PC with Windows 10 preloaded.
However, we will concern ourselves with the first two options.
But, be advised to backup your data before doing anything. Back up the key documents and other data to One Drive, a USB key, or something else; just in case.
Here's how to download window 10
At a point in time, Windows were upgraded by inserting an installation CD or DVD into the PC. But, presently, users have been trained to burn their own ISO files on their media.
And, beginning with Windows 8, Microsoft offered the option of restoring a Windows installation from an ISO file stored on a DVD or even on a flash.
However, with the new Windows 10 media creation tool, that option has become unnecessary. Because the new Window 10 media creation tool, creates a bootable flash drive that you don’t need to futz with. All you need do is to ensure the USB drive is at least 3 GB in size.
You have the option of using Microsoft's tool either for upgrading the current PC, or to store the bits on a USB key for safekeeping.
Select the proper version on the media creation tool page and check the system settings to double-check whether you’re running a 32- or 64-bit OS.
Afterwards, download and run it. The tool has quite a number of lovely features which includes the ability to simply upgrade the PC.
Unbelievable right? But it is true. As a matter of fact, you don’t even need the Windows 10 reservation, as the tool will simply jump you to the head of the line.
And, you can as well select whether you want Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Professional, either 32-bit or 64-bit versions, and even the installation language.
Important to realize is that, you can use this tool not only to upgrade Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PCs, but also Windows 10 PCs with older builds.
However, you won’t be able to score a free upgrade to Windows 10 Professional if your existing license doesn't support it.
Here's a reminder of who gets what:
Host operating system edition Windows 10 edition
Windows 7 Starter Windows 10 Home
Windows 7 Home Basic
Windows 7 Home Premium
Windows 8/8.1
Windows 8.1 with Bing
Windows 10 Home
Windows 7 Professional Windows 10 Pro
Windows 7 Ultimate
Windows 8 Pro
Windows 8.1 Pro
Windows 8/8.1 Professional with Media Center
Windows 10 Pro
Also, you can try a clean installation by booting directly from the USB key or DVD; when you do so, you have the option of keeping your files or wiping out everything.
However, Windows can claim that disk partitions are not properly organized. And when this happens, the process will hampered. Try an in-place installation instead.
And, from there, the installation will proceed smoothly. Be sure to allow Windows to download relevant drivers as the installation proceeds. The installation process will commence, when you have agreed to the licence agreement.
If you’re upgrading from a licensed copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, you may run into a situation where Windows asks for a license key.
When this happens, click the tiny “skip” option; Microsoft will dig out the license key from the depths of your machine. If this is a brand-new installation, of course, you’ll need to enter the proper key.
