Morinho will reportedly spend up to £200million to reinforce his squad, with the club having already announced an agreement with Benfica for the £30million signing of Swedish centre-back Victor Lindelöf.
In addition to Lindelöf, who is set to undergo a medical in Manchester ahead of sealing his switch to Old Trafford this week, the Red Devils are also believed to be closing in on the capture of striker Álvaro Morata from Real Madrid.
As was the case last summer when Pogba was joined by Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Eric Bailly and Zlatan Ibrahimović, Mourinho will look to make a total of four acquisitions during the current offseason.
Monaco’s versatile midfielder Fabinho and Inter Milan winger Ivan Perišić appear to be the most likely third and fourth men through the door at Old Trafford.
So, here’s how Mourinho could fit his expected arrivals into a cohesive 4-3-3 formation for the opening game of the season against West Ham United.
Interestingly the likes of Juan Mata, Wayne Rooney, Michael Carrick, Daley Blind, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard Ashley Young, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marouane Fellaini are squeezed out - should they still be at the club next term.
Goalkeeper - David de Gea
Of all the transfer business United have done and will continue to do this summer, keeping hold of de Gea may yet prove to be the most astute.
The Spanish goalkeeper was thought to top the list of Real Madrid transfer targets, but the Red Devils appear to have dug their heels in and will hold on to arguably the best goalkeeper in the world for at least one more campaign.
Right back – Antonio Valencia
It was only a couple of years ago that Valencia was regarded as a one-dimensional winger and one of the more underwhelming signings in United’s recent history. After all, he was brought in from Wigan Athletic to replace Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.
Now, however, having been converted into an aggressive, attack-minded full-back, Valencia is among the first names on Mourinho’s team sheet and was named the club’s Player of the Year last season.
Centre back – Eric Bailly
A £30million signing from Villarreal last summer, Bailly arrived at Old Trafford as somewhat of an unknown quantity to many fans. But his athleticism, commitment and physicality soon saw him become a key player for the Red Devils. With more tackles (2.6) and interceptions (2.6) per 90 minutes than any other centre-back at Mourinho’s disposal in 2016/17, Bailly has shown enough quality for the Portuguese coach to build his defence around the Ivorian for the next decade.
Centre back – Victor Lindelöf
Bailly is a firebrand of a defender, highly aggressive and always up for a battle. To complement the Ivory Coast international, United are set to bring in classy Swedish ball-playing centre-back Lindelöf.

Defensively strong, calm in possession and adept at springing attacking moves from deep, Lindelöf’s 89.9 per cent pass accuracy for last season was better than any United player, while his average of 62.2 passes per 90 minutes could only be topped by Ander Herrera, Michael Carrick and Pogba.
Left back – Luke Shaw
No player incurred the wrath of Mourinho quite as much as Shaw last season. Making his way back from a horrific leg break suffered at the tail end of 2015, the England international struggled to find a measure of consistency and the manager made no bones of publicly criticising the 21-year-old.
However, Shaw is still young and remains a player of enormous potential. If nurtured correctly he could develop into one of the best left-backs in the world. Mourinho needs to stay patient with the former Southampton man.
Right central midfield – Ander Herrera
Combative, disciplined and with no shortage of quality on the ball, Herrera has become the darling of Old Trafford over the last two years - many fans know feel the Spaniard should succeed Wayne Rooney as club captain.
With sound positioning and excellent anticipation, no midfielder in the Premier League could beat Herrera’s average of three interceptions per 90 minutes in 2016/17.
Central midfield – Fabinho
Teenage superstar Kylian Mbappé and Manchester City new boy Bernardo Silva may have stolen the majority of the plaudits for Monaco’s exhilarating Ligue 1 title triumph, but Fabinho, at the heart of midfield, was vital to the principality club’s success.
A converted full-back, the supremely athletic and intelligent Brazilian could be the man to allow Pogba to shine, freeing the gifted Frenchman from his defensive duties.
A fee of around £40million will be required if United are to convince the French champions to part ways with their midfield star.
Left central midfield – Paul Pogba
Many seem keen to write the £89million man off as a flop, dubbing him a monumental waste of money since his return to Old Trafford a year ago.
But the truth is that Pogba was largely excellent for United last term, scoring nine goals and registering five assists in all competitions.
And, with a full pre-season under his belt and some more quality additions around him, the stage will be set for Pogba to shine in 2017/18.
Right wing – Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Having been voted the best player in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, much was expected of Mkhitaryan when he signed for United from Borussia Dortmund in a £26million deal.
But after a subpar showing in September’s Manchester derby, Mourinho bizarrely elected to withdraw the Armenian schemer for much of the early part of the season.
Undeterred, Mkhitaryan worked his way back into the side and became a crucial cog in the Red Devils’ Europa League success, scoring six goals in the continental competition, including one in the final against Ajax.
Left wing – Ivan Perišić
French attacker Anthony Martial flattered to deceive last season after a stellar maiden campaign in England following his £36million move from Monaco in the summer of 2015.
The 21-year-old remains a player of immense potential but it seems Mourinho wants a ready-made option for his left flank next term.
Widespread reports suggest Croatian winger Perišić is a Manchester United transfer target. The 28-year-old scored 11 goals and registered eight assists in Serie A for Inter Milan last season and will reportedly cost in excess of £40million.
Striker – Álvaro Morata
Out injured until next year, United have decided not to extend 35-year-old Ibrahimović’s Old Trafford stay into a second season, meaning the 28-goal striker will need to be replaced.
Mourinho’s men ranked a lowly 17th for shot conversion last term (17 per cent) and no side missed more “big chances” than the wasteful Red Devils (50).
To solve this issue, Spain international Morata has been identified as a £60million target. The Real Madrid man’s average of one La Liga goal every 89 minutes last season could only be beaten by Lionel Messi.
The 24-year-old’s 27.27 per cent conversion rate was not only far better than any United player – Ibrahimović finished just 15.45 per cent of his chances – it was also a more efficient return than Harry Kane (23.36 per cent), the Premier League’s Golden Boot winner.
